Epubs loaded to Kobo missing small bits of text

Hello,
I am currently using a Kobo Aura H2O Second Edition. I've gotten in the habit of downloading my ebooks from the seller and installing them on the device (rather than downloading them directly to the device), particularly since adding them from the device to the Calibre library seems like it will be problematic every time something changes.

However, I've discovered that for a few books, the entire text shows up in the Calibre reader, but when they are added to my Kobo, parts of sentences or whole paragraphs go missing - mostly at the end of chapters or before a scene break. I tried to search for other people posting this problem but couldn't find anything that seemed exactly the same. A few things seemed to suggest that the epub file downloaded from the Kobo site might not be exactly the same as the one loaded directly to my device? And that the downloaded file might have errors in the CSS?

I have very, very, very basic experience in editing CSS files, so if this is indeed the problem, explicit directions for potentially fixing the problem would be appreciated. Or if you think it might be something else entirely?

If I have missed any information that might be helpful in diagnosing the problem, please ask! Thank you in advance for any insights.

Calibre keeps disconnecting my kindle.

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out what's the problem.

I have a Kindle ( super basic edition ) that has started to give me some problems while sending books to it.

What happens is this.
I run calibre, which starts normally. I then connect my kindle to usb port and it get detected from the system ( linux ) and calibre.
I can see what's inside it but if I try to send a new book to it I see the kindle screen as it has been disconnected, and calibre gives me this error :
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-pigi'
[Errno 13] Permission denied: '/mnt/sdb1/documents'

File "os.py", line 150, in makedirs
File "os.py", line 157, in makedirs
OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/mnt/sdb1/documents'

and in the dmesg I get:
[ 1220.207223] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 access beyond end of device
[ 1220.207228] blk_update_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 17 op 0x1:(WRITE) flags 0x0 phys_seg 1 prio class 0

[ 1220.207252] blk_update_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 8380 op 0x1:(WRITE) flags 0x0 phys_seg 2 prio class 0
[ 1220.207254] Buffer I/O error on dev sdb1, logical block 8364, lost async page write
[ 1220.207255] Buffer I/O error on dev sdb1, logical block 8365, lost async page write

I've tracked down this one as it happens because the mount point get somehow disconnected.

At this point the only chance I get is to disconnect the usb port and connect again, but as soon as I try to write to the kindle I get the same error.

Initially I thought that the problm could have been on kindle filesystem or flash, thus I did an fsck to it and also tried on an other computer but with the same results.

If, instead, I do close calibre, mount the kindle by hand ( mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1 ) I can write to it the books or whatever I want without any problem.
I can the read those book without any problem.
This mean ( to me ) that kindle is perfectly working, and also that the usb side of my linux is working too.

Any hint on how to track down the problem ?

Thanks in advance

Problem with transferring books to Kindle via Calibre

Hi there,:help:
So, I'm kinda new to this whole...thing (never posted on a forum before, I hope I'm doing it ok). Calibre has really helped me a lot with transferring my library to my brand-new-first-ever Kindle, yay! But. No matter what I try (uploading them all to the device at once, or in smaller groups), at some point it starts re-uploading books that are already on the device every time I connect the device to my computer (like, about 20 files, the same ones every time, they appear anew on my Kindle like I just transferred them as well for the first time)...does anyone know how to fix/prevent this? Pleaseeeee it's driving me crazy and I don't know how to fix it, please tell me there's a way how :help::(:thanks::book2:

Sudden issue with books sideloaded onto Kindle not appearing

Hello! I've been using calibre to sideload books onto my kindle for I think about 7 years now and I have never run into this issue before. Basically, I have a list of like 15 books that I tried to load via Calibre, and all seemed to be normal. Upon ejecting the device, however, only 2 showed up on the kindle. I plugged it back in, and according to Calibre the books are 'on' my kindle - but they are nowhere to be found. I deleted all the books off the device with calibre and tried to re-load them, with the same result. Calibre thinks everything is fine, only 2 books show up in my device. I have ruled out any issues with the sort settings on my kindle, and even searching specifically for a book produces no results, and rebooting the kindle did nothing. I'm not sure what to do to fix it, as I haven't had any issues with Calibre misbehaving before. The books seem fine if I open them with the Callibre book reader.

Calibre Version: 4.10.1 x64
OS: Windows 7
Device: Kindle Paperwhite 2, Firmware 5.12.2

Kindle keeps rejecting emailed book sent via Calibre

Hi,
I have been using calibre for years and have never had a problem emailing books to kindle email addresses. All the kindle addresses I send to are set up to send in MOBI format. All of a sudden the books are being rejected. This is the message I receive :

Dear Customer,

The following document, sent at 09:04 PM on Wed, Feb 19, 2020 GMT could not be delivered to the Kindle you specified:
* Unbroken_ A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption - Laura Hillenbrand.MOBI

The Kindle Personal Document Service can convert and deliver the following types of documents:
Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
Rich Text Format (.rtf)
HTML (.htm, .html)
Text (.txt) documents
Archived documents (zip , x-zip) and compressed archived documents
Mobi book

Images that are of type JPEGs (.jpg), GIFs (.gif), Bitmaps (.bmp), and PNG images (.png).
Adobe PDF (.pdf) documents are delivered without conversion to Kindle DX, Second Generation and Latest Generation Kindles.

Adobe PDF (.pdf) can be converted to Kindle format and delivered on an experimental basis.

If the document that failed belonged to one of the above document types, please ensure the document is not password protected or encrypted. Note that the Latest Generation Kindles support password protected PDFs.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I have been sending to kindle addresses for years...never had this problem before. I did some testing this afternoon and every single kindle address rejects my calibre sent books. I have no problem sending books (EPUB) to non Kindle emails. Please help:help:

Windows 7 & new Calibre updates

I use Windows 7 SP 1 & refuse to upgrade to that abomination, Windows 10. Whenever I get a message to update Calibre (I use 64-bit version 4.11.1), it warns me not to upgrade, but to back off to an old version of Calibre - 3.48. I ignore this & continue to download Calibre new releases & updated third-party anti-DRM plug-ins. It still works fine for me. Is there something I am missing by not going back to 3.48? As long as the newest Calibre works seamlessly with Windows 7 SP 1, why should I revert to an antique version?

Can Calibre see/keep my Kobo tags/Collections?

I use Calibre on a MacBook Air, and really love (and support) the app.

I have a couple different ereaders but my favorite is my Kobo Forma N782 (which I just found out has been discontinued and they no longer support? I just bought that for $289 18 months ago).

It hooks up to Calibre just fine, which is nice, but if I make a "Collection" on the Kobo, it doesn't come through to Calibre. Similarly, if I try to tag the books on the device from inside Calibre, and then unplug the Kobo, the books don't show the tags when I turn the unit back on.

Is there any way to keep tags on your books in place when you move them to an ereader?

Thanks!

Calibre crashes when reading from device

At around 45 seconds Calibre crashes reading from my device. and each time i restart it it with the tablet connected it crashes faster and faster until it crashes at startup. If i remove the device and reconnect it it starts the whole sequence over again.

It does this even after I've rebooted both my PC and the device.

This is the debug text from the crash.

Whats interesting is that I updated Calibre earlier today and it worked, but after ejecting my device and coming back a few hours later to add books it crashed.

Any help would be appreciated, this has been going on for a couple months now.

Kindle Ejects When Pushing Metadata

$

0
OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS, 64 bit
Calibre version: 3.21.0, default plugins only
Ereader: Kindle Paperwhite 3rd gen, firmware version 5.12.3

I have some messy metadata on my Kindle, so I downloaded Calibre to clean it up, but it fails to push the updates back to the Kindle.

I've successfully imported ebooks from my Kindle into my Calibre library, where I made the metadata updates. I then matched the Kindle's copy to the library and chose "update cached metadata on device", at which point the Kindle ejected spontaneously, with its book metadata unchanged.

When I reconnect, Calibre's device view shows the updated metadata, rather than what is actually present on the device. If I delete the Calibre metadata files from my Kindle's file root and restart Calibre, Calibre once again correctly shows the device's current metadata. Another attempt afterward at updating the device metadata has the same result. I've restarted both my computer and my Kindle, with the same result.

Any ideas? I've never had trouble with my Kindle unmounting when I drop things onto it manually.

Hello everyone from a newbie to this forum.

As a subscriber to the Sunday Times I download a free ebook each month on to my iPad. All very simple and straightforward. The problem is that I want to put them into my Calibre library list on my Windows laptop and I cannot make it happen. Any advice would be appreciated.

How to customize touch based interactions?

I am using an Asus T102 with Win10.
I would like to customize touch based interactions because the default ones make it impossible for me to read any book without pulling my hair out because of constant "mis-navigation". Could you please help me with this? Also with a list of defaults?

Error Communicating With Device

I have read a number of threads out there going back to 2011 about this Calibre error. I have tried a lot of the suggestions offered. None of them have worked. There seems to be a variety of reasons for this error all centered around why Calibre cannot communicate with your device or at least why Calibre thinks it cannot communicate with your device. I got so frustrated I ordered a new Kobo Forma (on sale) because my Kobo Aura One is pretty old and I thought that maybe my ereader was just broke.

Of course I then stumbled on the solution after ordering my new Kobo. My solution is not out there that I can see so I thought I'd post it so others can consider it as a potential solution. The book I was currently reading was corrupted. The magical IT fairies corrupted my book and Kobo had a fit when I tried to open it. It was fine yesterday. I deleted it. I then plugged my Kobo back into my computer and Calibre is now happy with it. The error msg is gone. I hope this helps someone.

"Send to device" of book already present does not overwrite?

Tried this a few times and the book was not updated with the new content... Need to delete the book first and resend in order to update it. Is this the expected behavior? And if so is there a way to set Calibre to overwrite books when sending one that is already present on the device?

Nook Glowlight Classic, Rooted

I've run into a strange error with my Glowlight. It's possible the problem started after I rooted it and I never loaded any more books to it until now.

The about page shows the model, serial number, app version (50.0.113/5.0.527), shop version (v5.0271), readouts version(v5.0.155) - not sure if any of that shows the root type.

Anyways, if I connect it empty, I can load any books I want, they all get check marks, they all show up if I switch over to the device tab. If I eject it and reconnect, about half of the books no longer have check marks, and in the device tab it lists a series of "Unknown/Unknown" books. When highlighted as in the image, it shows the file path, containing the name of the book (in this case Norse Mythology). If I click to open I get the following error:

Quote:

If I click to open a book that is checked, it opens fine. If I disconnect and try to open "Norse Mythology" on the Nook itself, it opens fine.

I've tested multiple cables and USB ports, threw out one cable, and verified a combination that works fine with my (also rooted) Nook Simple Touch 100% of the time.

I've tried wiping all the books (including the Unknowns) from the Glowlight and loading new ones, and they show up fine until ejected and reconnected and we're back where we started.

If there's any other diagnostic info that would be helpful that I haven't found, let me know. This obviously isn't end-of-the-world stuff, because I can read them just fine, it just makes it tricky to change the collections as I read through them.

Thank you.
