Kindle Paperwhite won't connect to Calibre

My son's Kindle won't connect to Calibre anymore. It never had this problem before. Just started. I reset the kindle and tried a different cable. I don't know what else to do. Suggestions? Below is the info from the clipboard.

Kindle paperwhite unmounted by Calibre

I have a Kindle Paperwhite which has stopped working with Calibre. It used to work with an earlier version of Calibre, but I haven't used it for a while, and just discovered it won't work with my current Calibre, version 3.44.0 (I know this isn't the very latest but I prefer to stick with the version that comes with the Ubuntu distribution).

I'm on Linux. If I don't start Calibre, and connect through the USB port, the Kindle appears at /dev/sda and /dev/sda1, and I can manually mount it and access the contents. The Kindle shows the USB Drive Mode page.

If instead I start Calibre, Calibre recognizes the Kindle, reads the contents, and immediately after unmounts the Kindle. After that /dev/sda is present, but there is no /dev/sda1. The Kindle itself goes straight to its homepage. Calibre, however, doesn't seem to recognize that the Kindle has gone away (the device still appears on the dashboard), and Calibre still shows me the list of books on the Kindle. Of course, if I try to run a command (eg. copy book to Kindle) Calibre gives me an error message: it can't see /media/myname/kindle. Which is correct, because its gone away.

The Kindle is unmodified: I have never rooted it, I've only ever side-loaded books to it, and I have done a full reset and deleted *.calibre from it. Any suggestions for anything else I can try?

Thanks
Graham

Kindle Paperwhite not recognized by Calibre in linux

My Kindle Paperwhite doesn't show up in Calibre, but it does show up as a mounted drive in Linux. How do I get it to also show up in Calibre? A little weird that it doesn't, especially since I believe this program was was originally coded because there weren't any options for an ereader in Linux. Seems like the functionality would already be built in, right? :)

Likebook Ares: Error communicating with device

I have had this device for about two months and so far did not experience any trouble with it talking to Calibre. Now, out of a sudden, it stops working, every attempt ending with this dreaded error message. The details are as follows:

This is on calibre 4.12.0. Neither the device nor calibre where upgraded recently and there are now other changes either, except that I have been reading on the device.

I tried the obvious things like rebooting the device, the computer, I even removed the calibre device and metadata files because they might have been corrupted, but there is no way getting around this.

Any advice on how to proceed here is appreciated,

All the best,

calibre metadata file on kindle oasis

How long do you think it takes to rebuild a corrupt 'calibre metadata' file on a kindle oasis 32gb, so at the moment there are over 3000 books on there.

Nearly 15 minutes is a bit excessive. How does the file become corrupted - I do not know, it happens quite often and I am extremely careful when it comes to plugging and un-plugging the kindle, I make sure all jobs are finished but still it corrupts for no reason at all, not often and not repeatable.

Maybe there is another method or some additional steps that can be taken to reduce this time. Backups come to mind, either on device or on the PC, or both and check which is newer.

Why can't I upload an epub3 book to my Kobo Forma?

I downloaded an epub3 from https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/p-...th-in-the-city.

Kobo's help page (https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/artic...ks-app-support) says that Kobo ereaders support epub3.

When I try to upload the epub3 from my Calibre library, I get this error message.

Quote:

WARNING: No suitable formats: Could not upload the following books to the device, as no suitable formats were found. Convert the book(s) to a format supported by your device first.

Why is conversion necessary?

Help please. How does one select preferred format when transferring to device?

Is there a way to choose which format of a book to transfer to my android tab? CBR & not AZW3?

Thank you.

Too many "genres" on Inkpad 3

$

Hi all,

I have looked and looked for an answer to this problem, but am at a loss... hopefully someone can help me out.

I have a Pocketbook/Vivlio Inkpad 3 and am using Calibre to send ebooks to it. I am very particular about how books are sorted; I like my library to look the way I want it to look, and have therefore erased all the metadata of my books except author, title and series.

In spite of that, when I enter my Inkpad library and sort by "genres" I have a million different ones! Well, just about one different genre by book (see attachment), which completely defeats the purpose...

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? I removed all tags from all books (which took me houuuurs), and I don't know where the Inkpad is getting the "genre" data. I would like to remove all that and sort my books into only 6-7 genres (as they should be...)

Any help is appreciated :)

Hope everyone is staying safe !

Kindle not showing sideloaded books

$

I purchased 4 books from Amazon today. I prefer to download them to my computer, get all the info the way I like it on Calibre, then transfer it to my Kindle Voyage (first version) directly.

The first two books I accidentally had delivered straight to the Kindle, which actually helps as information for the troubleshooting. I also downloaded those two and processed them through Calibre.

In Calibre, I deleted the two downloaded books in On Device view, and transferred the books over in KFX. I can see all 4 books in On Device view in Calibre. However, on the Voyage, I first could only see the original downloaded books (attempting to open them says Item Not Available). About 10 minutes later, one of the other sideloaded books appeared as it should. The other three transfers are nowhere to be seen.

I have restarted the Kindle to no avail. I did a search for a nonsense word to check if anything was stuck in indexing; the search results do not indicate that indexing is stuck. If I look in the Mac's Finder, I see that the books are properly placed in their respective folders, but there is no associated .sdr file (I presume this file is generated after the book is opened, but I can't find much information on that).

Stats:
Calibre 4.12.
Kindle Voyage firmware 5.12.4
1013 books on Kindle
948 MB free on Kindle

tl;dr: Why won't the Kindle interface update to reflect the books I sideloaded?

EDIT: After a half hour, the other three books magically appeared and the deleted books vanished. What would take so long, how do I get it to work faster?

most basic newbie questions

I've seen kindle copies of books on amazon for years, but don't have electronic gizmos like ipads, iphones, kindle readers and so forth. I only have my PC running a recent 64-bit Linux Mint operating system.

I finally broke down and decided to read what appear to be free kindle versions of books on the amazon.com website. I found my way to the calibre website, entered the line of text from the website to install on my computer, and the installation process apparently completed with no problems.

I figured I could now download and view ebooks ... sorta like downloading PDF files and reading with the PDF viewer application. Right? I mean ... I figured "isn't an ebook more-or-less just a PDF file"?

Uh, maybe not?

When I executed calibre in a terminal window displayed a dialog that says "welcome to caliber" and says "the one stop solution to all your e-book needs". Sounds great!

But then the dialog asks me to "choose your e-book device". My e-book device? What is an e-book device? I mean, isn't calibre "my one stop solution to my e-book needs"? Isn't my linux computer my e-book device? If not, what is?

And how do I download the free ($0.00) books from amazon that I was looking at? For example, like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Mike-Busch-Ai..._encoding=UTF8

I started reading various documents but just got more and more confused about what this whole ebook/calibre process is. Maybe because I expected something simple and obvious like a PDF viewer + PDF files + some kind of library mechanism to display available/saved books I have my head screwed on backwards or inside-out. But what I figured had to be simple seems anything but simple or obvious.

Is there some super-brief, super-concise explanation of everything somewhere? Or can someone write an answer that is essentially a 2, 3, 5, 8 paragraph "reading ebooks with calibre on linux computer for absolute, complete, utter morons" to explain how I can download ebooks and view them on my 64-bit linux mint computer with calibre?

Oh, and don't forget to tell me what is my "device" so I can get past the first step in the calibre welcome wizard. And also the answers to all the rest of the steps that might follow that I haven't seen yet.

Thanks much.

And if something like this exists, feel free to just point me there. But it really must be written for someone who has ZERO context and knows ZERO of the established lingo (like what is a "device"). Otherwise I'll just throw up my hands in frustration and forget ebooks exist for yet another decade.

Oh, one final note. I have no interest in this entire ebook universe if I can't read supposedly free ebooks without paying (for the ebook and/or reader and/or anything else). If "free" doesn't mean "free", then I'd rather just continue to buy physical printed books and forget I ever heard terms like ebooks and kindle. So if that's the case, just say "free ain't free" and no need to explain calibre and so forth.

Kindle for PC: downloaded books not showing up in MY LIBRARY folder

Using v 1.28 of KINDLE FOR PC, so I can grab books out of the My Library folder and get them into Calibre.

Now these newly-purchased books are not showing as files in the folder. They are appearing INSIDE newly-dated folders, still as .azw files. Copying them into Calibre, they appear with no metadata. That is of course easy to remedy in Calibre.

However, Calibre is telling me they are KFX files and can't be converted... but that was my whole point for using the older version of Kindle for PC.

I do have the latest DRM conversion tools in Calibre.

Hi team,
Hope I'm in the right area as a first time user. I have been using Calibre for years ? now, but since the update previous to the current one, I have been unable to transfer converted books to my Samsung Galaxy Tab. I need to in through File Explorer find the converted book and copy it across.

Any ideas. (Device is not being ignored - any more) This also seems to have happened since the update.

Cheers

Calibre rescans entire SD card each time device is connected

$

I have a Boyue Likebook Mars with an external SD card on which I store the books that I load from Calibre. I've noticed this odd behavior from Calibre where it rescans the whole file system on the card each time I connect the device, taking anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes.

Calibre is on version 4.13 running on Ubuntu Linux, I've fiddled with the different options for metadata management and configured the device and SD card to scan only specific folders, but each connection still involves a full scan (at least, going by the "Found object <folder>" messages that show up for the fetching book list task in the jobs window).

Is there anything I can do to speed up this process?

Virtual connected to ebook reader

Hej,
I hope you can help me, please?
Each time I start Calibre on my notebook (Windows 10 and latest version of Calibre) it shows a not connected ebook reader (a book cannot be tranferredat that moment).
After listing the virtual books which shows some of the entries on the virtual ebook reader copied, it can be disconnected without any error message, the column disappears. And the icons change to normal status.
A later connected ebook reader lets the column appear again and can be used as usual.
Who knows how to correct the start of my calibre?

Thanks in advance. :bookworm:

Hi all,

I run version 3.48.0 of Calibre which is the latest version of Calibre I can run on my MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan).

My Kobo is an Aura H2O.
Recently it automatically upgraded to firmware 4.20.14622.

Since then I get an error when I connect the Kobo to Calibre :

Calibre 'translates' greek titles to english

Hi,

(sorry for the duplicate posting, but I am not sure if I posted in the right section)

I am trying to move my books from Kindle Voyage to Onyx Boox Note 2.
Reading from the Kindle to Calibre's library is ok.
However, when I push the library to the Note 2, all the Greek fonts in the titles are 'translated' to English characters.
Can this be disabled and push them with the correct fonts?

:thanks:

Collections in kobo clara

I manage my ebooks in calibre.
I added an extra field 'collection'.
I could use this field in my old kobo touch.
Now I have the kobo Clara HD.
I transferred my books to the Clara.
However...although the books are and authors are now present in the kobo Clara, the collections are empty.
I did not do anything different as I did using the kobo touch.
