[KOBO] Help with Metadata Transfer

If I add series information to the metadata, how can I be certain that when I send a file to my KOBO that the series data will go over with it? Also, if I fix an author's name, how can I make sure that fix also goes over?

Also, what does "update cached metadata on device" actually do?

I spent a lot of time updating the metadata, so I want to make sure it that comes through on my device.
