Device detected but error communicating

So I rarely connect my iPad/iPhone with the lightning cable to my computer to communicate with Calibre, using Dropbox to transfer to Marvin. However, I occasionally connect to transfer a MOBI to Kindle on iPad. Yesterday, I discovered that I can no longer connect properly. I also discovered the same connection difficulty with my wife's iPad and her laptop. Both are using the latest Calibre version.

I have gone through Kovid's "Device not detected" protocol, to no avail, so I am posting here.

Relevant error messages follow:

On connecting the device, Calibre generates the following:

calibre, version 2.68.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 87, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 503, in _books
File "calibre_plugins.ios_reader_apps.__init__", line 704, in books
NotImplementedError

On Attempting to click debug device detection in Preferences->Miscellaneous, I get:

calibre, version 2.68.0
ERROR: Device already detected: A device (iOS reader applications) is already detected by calibre. If you wish to debug the detection of another device, first disconnect this device.

Calibre reports the device is connected at the bottom of the main screen. I have removed and reinstalled iosRA. I am not looking to connect via iTunes if at all possible. I'd simply like the usual functionality of being able to connect Calibre to Kindle on the iPad.

Thanks for your help. If this is redundant, I apologize, but I was unable to solve the issue by searching the forum.

Thanks.

Jim N.
